Under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), any food, seed, or animal feed that is labelled organic is regulated by Part 13 of the SFCR, specifically if it:
- has an organic claim on the label and is sold between provinces or territories or imported; or
- displays the Canada Organic Logo on the label and is sold within or outside of Canada.
The SFCR also outlines the organic certification system known as the Canada Organic Regime (COR). The purpose of the COR is to regulate all parties involved in the certification of organic products and to verify all applicable regulatory requirements, standards and guidance documents are being met.
As a Certification Body, TCO Cert will require compliance to Part 13 of the SFCR, but has no obligation or jurisdiction under the other Parts of the SFCR.
Certified organic operators should be aware other regulations and requirements stated in the SFCR may also apply to your operation as they apply to ALL food producers, regardless of whether certified organic or not.
